In a month I am headed to visit my friend Genie in Memphis, TN. (well, Germantown). And I'm taking the train! My trip is two and a half weeks, pretty much evenly divided between time on the train and at my friend's house.
I decided not to invest in the sleeper or bedroom upgrade. It seems like a lot of money for what you get.
I don't have to stay in my seat, I can go to the lounge car or viewing car to try to stretch out if I want to. Each route has different trains, some of them have long benches in the lounge car, and others have double seats in the viewing car. They are all open all night, so if I can't get comfortable in my Coach seat I have options. Someone told me, since I'm travelling at the low season, to ask the attendant if there are any empty sleeper cars I can use by myself for the daytimes.
Seeing the US by Train
I'll be riding from Vancouver, BC, to Seattle for two days and nights before getting to Chicago. Staying overnight there, then the next evening off for an overnight trip to Memphis. Hanging out at Genie's for nine days. Then its off to New Orleans, where I don't get to stay for very long so may save the money on a hotel room and just stay up all night.
My Journey : Map + Travel Schedule
From New Orleans, another two days and nights to LA, where there is a really unfortunate 5:30am train change. That afternoon I transfer at Salinas to stay in Monterey for one night. Last chance to relax before getting home! One-plus day and one night before arriving back in Vancouver at 12:30am then going to work the next morning.
I'll be blogging and Tweeting the whole time, so keep coming back for updates. I'll post more before my departure as details get settled.
Pretty excited! I get to see almost the entire circumference of the US.
